Room 9

Today Bradley gave us an interesting showcase about a curious experiment he has been working on at home.  Thank you Bradley for sharing your 'Naked Egg' with us!  The students enjoyed asking you questions and discovering all about what you have been up to.  Well done!

Today in Room 9 we looked at what makes shapes different.  We came up with: Number of sides Number of corners Right angles Parallels We used 8 small triangles to create these shapes: Rectangles Trapezium Parallelogram Large triangle Here we are in action!

Room 9 have been looking at the 1960s, when Stanley Avenue School opened.  The students have come up with many questions about how life was different at the time.  Come into class and check out our walls which track our inquiry process as it develops. We would love to answer your questions about it too!

Today we looked at how when the denominator is larger, the fraction is smaller as it has been shared more times.

Welcome back to Term 3.  We are all excited about the interesting learning we will be doing this term.  Our class Inquiry is ' Looking Back to Look Forward '.  This will link into the school's 50th Jubilee, as we will be looking at what life in Te Aroha and at Stanley Avenue School was like when the school opened fifty years ago.  We will then use what we learn to make predictions about what life will be like in another fifty years. Then.. Now...

Today Room 9 had lots of fun finishing our Egyptian Papyrus as part of our Learn to Read, Read to Learn Inquiry.  We have discovered that there are many different symbols and scripts from around the world and that the first writing people did looked different to the writing we use now.  We are still waiting for our pulp to soften before we create our own sheets of recycled newspaper.  We would love you to come in and have a look!

The Wicked Witch of the East came all the way from Oz to teach Room 9 on Book Character Day... 

For Term 2 our Inquiry is Read to Learn - Learn to Read . In Room 9 we have started by looking at traditional fables and stories. Coming soon will be our learning about The Emperors New Clothes and the fabulous wall display we are creating to demonstrate our learning!

Ella shared with Room 9 some learning she has been doing at home from an interesting book about the human body.  The students found the knowledge she shared really interesting and had heaps of questions for her.  Thanks Ella!

A Danish Zoo has put to death a baby giraffe, 2 lion cubs and a full grown lion. Other Zoos offered to take the animals. We think this is cruel because they killed the animals in front of an audience. "Who does that?" Said Kyra. Luca says, "It's teaching other people to do the same thing which is a bad thing because its bad for the animals." "If they keep killing animals there will be no more animals left to visit in the zoo," said Amber and Jenee. "It's cruel because the baby animals deserve to live a life of their own. On the news it said that the lions were hungry but they should have used other meat rather than the baby giraffe, " said Hunter.

Yesterday we had Life Education on the brain. We remembered so much from what we have discussed in class.  Here are some videos and photos from our first session. Make a comment about something you learned.

We read about the first Formula One race and watched this video clip that explained about how the new cars work.

Today we learned how to look at an object's darks and lights, and how to use sketching to display this. This is what we drew
